Demand Generation

Also known as: demand gen

Demand generation is the set of activities that create awareness of and interest in your product across a market — building future demand rather than only capturing the demand that already exists. It spans content, education, outreach, and brand-building, all aimed at making more of your potential market aware they have a problem you solve. Lead generation then captures the interest demand gen creates; the two work as a pipeline, not as rivals.

Demand generation vs. lead generation

The two are often confused. Demand generation is broader and earlier: it creates interest and educates a market, so more buyers eventually exist. Lead generation is narrower and later: it captures contact information and surfaces specific prospects you can pursue. Demand gen grows the size of the pond; lead gen catches the fish. A healthy growth motion needs both — generating demand so there's interest to capture, and capturing it efficiently so it becomes pipeline.

How it fits with outbound

Outbound and demand generation reinforce each other. Demand gen makes your outbound more effective: a prospect who's already encountered your name or your ideas is far more receptive to a cold email than one hearing about you for the first time. Conversely, outbound is how you reach specific high-fit accounts that your broader demand gen may not have touched yet. The strongest programs use demand gen to warm the market and targeted outbound to convert the best-fit accounts within it.

Capturing only existing demand caps your growth at the people already looking. Demand generation expands the future market, making every downstream lead-gen and outbound effort more productive over time.
