Lead Scoring

Also known as: lead grading, prospect scoring

Lead scoring is the practice of ranking prospects with a number or grade that reflects how well they fit your ideal customer and how likely they are to convert. Scores are based on factors like firmographic fit (industry, size, revenue), buying signals (hiring, expansion, funding), and engagement. By sorting leads by score, a team spends its limited selling time on the highest-probability prospects first instead of working an unsorted list.

How lead scoring works

A scoring model assigns points for the traits that correlate with a good customer: stronger firmographic fit earns points, a fresh buying signal earns more, and a confirmed senior decision-maker earns more still. Leads are then ranked by total score and worked top-down. The model can be simple and manual or driven by AI that learns which traits actually predict conversion from your real outcomes. Either way, the purpose is the same: turn a flat list into a prioritized queue.

Why prioritization matters

Sales capacity is finite — a team can only send so many emails or make so many calls a day. Without scoring, a perfect-fit decision-maker and a barely-relevant contact get treated as equals, and results average out to mediocre. Scoring also protects deliverability and time: working the strongest leads first keeps engagement high and avoids burning effort on prospects who were never going to buy.

Lead scoring is what separates busy from effective. It ensures the most valuable selling hours go to the prospects most likely to become customers, which directly raises conversion rates and pipeline efficiency.

Lead Scoring: FAQ

What factors go into a lead score?

Typically firmographic fit (industry, size, revenue), buying signals (hiring, expansion, funding, tool usage), and engagement or reachability (a confirmed senior decision-maker). Stronger signals earn more points, and leads are ranked by total score.

What's the point of lead scoring?

To prioritize. Sales capacity is finite, so scoring ensures your best selling time goes to the highest-probability prospects first, instead of treating a perfect-fit decision-maker and a weak contact as equals.
