AI SDR

Also known as: AI sales development representative, AI sales agent

An AI SDR (AI sales development representative) is software that automates the repetitive parts of sales development: finding and scoring prospects, personalizing cold outreach, sending follow-ups, and routing replies. Instead of a human rep spending hours on research and data entry, the AI handles the volume so people focus on the conversations that need a human. It is a way to scale top-of-funnel prospecting without proportionally scaling headcount.

What an AI SDR does

A traditional sales development rep finds leads, researches them, sends initial outreach, and follows up until a prospect replies — then hands warm conversations to an account executive. An AI SDR automates the mechanical layers of that job: it surfaces businesses matching your ideal customer, scores them by fit, drafts personalized messages at scale, fires multi-step sequences, and stops the moment someone replies. What it does not do is replace the human in the actual sales conversation — the goal is to get a qualified prospect to the point of a real discussion, not to negotiate the deal.

AI SDR vs. hiring a human SDR

A human SDR brings judgment, relationship skill, and the ability to handle nuance — but is expensive, takes months to ramp, and can only work so many accounts a day. An AI SDR is faster to deploy and works continuously at far higher volume, but it is a tool, not a closer: it is best at the high-volume, repeatable top-of-funnel work and weakest at the human parts. Most teams use the two together — the AI handles prospecting and first-touch at scale, and people handle the replies.

Sales reps famously spend less than half their time actually selling; the rest goes to research, data entry, and follow-up. An AI SDR attacks exactly that wasted time, which is why it has become one of the highest-leverage ways for small teams to keep a full pipeline without hiring a prospecting team.

AI SDR: FAQ

Does an AI SDR replace a human sales rep?

No. An AI SDR automates the repetitive top-of-funnel work — finding prospects, personalizing outreach, and following up — to get a qualified prospect to a real conversation. The actual selling, which needs judgment and relationship skill, stays with a human. Most teams pair the two.

What's the difference between an AI SDR and a lead list?

A lead list is a static set of contacts you buy once; an AI SDR continuously finds, scores, and reaches prospects, and adapts over time. The list is raw data, the AI SDR is the worker that does something with it.
